The Old Testament prophet Daniel is shown
praying among lions, while skulls and bones in the foreground heighten the
sense of danger. On the reverse of this drawing, Van Renesse wrote a personal
note revealing he was a pupil of Rembrandt — a rare glimpse into the
relationship between master and student: “de eerste tijckening getoont Bij
Rembrant in Jaer 1649 den 1 october / het waert voor de tweede mael dat ick bij
Rembrant geweest ben.”
