This portrait of a scholar is unusual in Jan
Lievens’ oeuvre, as he depicted the figure full-length. Most of his portraits
show only the face or a half-figure. The central part of the drawing was
incised with a stylus for a woodcut, bearing Lievens’ monogram (Hollstein XI,
no. 102). It is unknown whether Lievens produced the woodcuts himself or had
his drawings carved by others.
