Around 1653-1654, Haarlem painter, draughtsman and engraver Leendert van der Cooghen made two studies of a young woman wearing a bonnet. For this study, Van der Cooghen used red chalk, while for the later, more detailed version in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (inv. no. RP-T-1948-398), he used black chalk, with only the cheeks and mouth in red. Both studies are made from live models and highly detailed. This is typical of his drawings of the period. Like his other drawings, they cannot be related to his surviving paintings and seem to be autonomous.
