Courbet was not a prolific draughtsman, but this study of a forest scene may have been made in the forest of Fontainebleau, where many artists associated with the Barbizon school came to paint. Courbet was not a close member of this group, although he exhibited several landscape paintings at the Salon. He also travelled to Germany in 1858, where he also painted several forest scenes.
