Corot visited the small town of Ariccia, south of Rome, during his first visit to Italy between 1825 and 1828. He did not visit the town during his second visit in 1834, but stayed there again during the summer of 1843. This view towards the town from an approach road may be one of several drawings and paintings he made from memory back in France of the places he had seen in Italy.
