This drawing is one of many neat and precise studies of Rome and the surrounding countryside that Corot made during his first visit to Rome from 1825 to 1828. An oil sketch in the Museum of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco shows the same view. Both studies served as the starting point for two paintings made by Corot when he was back in France.
