Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux was a renowned sculptor during the Second Empire in France, but he was also a talented draughtsman and painter. In his studio after his death there was a series of paintings and drawings depicting the Siege of Paris in 1870-1871, which he witnessed first-hand. He made drawings of combat scenes, soldiers, victims and the aftermath of battles in the streets, often with great immediacy. This drawing probably belongs to that series. Several wounded people are carried away on stretchers.
