Ask anything

  • Patricia Hagoort-Elias asked

I have an item similar to “The Courtyard” with similar dimensions. Before I get rid of it, how can I know if it is a real etching or a photocopy? Thanks

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Patricia, your piece probably is not a photocopy but a reproduction. Or it, indeed, possibly is an etching – which in fact is also a reproduction, but then made directly from a copper plate and not via a photographic process. In this case the edges from the plate might have left traces in the paper (slight relief). It is impossible to say without seeing the piece in reality, so I would advise you to go to an expert, (art dealer, printer, artist). Good luck and kind regards, Els
