The series ‘Crush’ consists of twenty photographs, of which the museum owns three. Paul Kooiker deals with a classical subject, the nude, but is not looking for ideal beauty. In messy rooms, he displays naked women more as pieces of furniture than as people. The models stand or lie in inelegant poses and seem unaware of the camera; their faces remain unrecognisable. The lack of sharp focus in some images and the nonchalant manner in which Kooiker photographs his subjects gives the suggestion that he is spying on the women. The observer is a voyeur and the female body is an object.
