Since the beginning of his career, portraiture has formed a central theme in the work of Wouter van Riessen. He explores the relationship between identity and self-reflection, making use of dolls, masks and strongly stylised facial features. Self-Portrait with Black Face and Guitar belongs to a series of early, experimental self-portraits that at the time were closely connected to his artistic research.
Today, this work calls for a different sensitivity. There is now greater awareness of negative associations that were not at the forefront then. The museum presents the work as an important part of Van Riessen’s early development, while acknowledging the changed context in which it is viewed today.
