In 1903, this work was the first painting by the famous painter in a public Dutch collection, donated by 26 art lovers. Van Gogh himself called the work “Symphony in Yellow” in a letter to his brother. After 140 years, the painting was in need of restoration.

Discover the story of Poplar Avenue near Nuenen in this temporary presentation across from our painting restoration studio on the second floor of the Depot. The presentation is accompanied by a Boijmans Study (scholarly publication) and a film by Gerrit Schreurs about the restoration.

This Boijmans Study can be read as a biography of this layered work of art and offers insight into the restoration process. The research examined earlier treatments, later brushstrokes, unexpected drip marks, and problems with paint adhesion. Yellowed varnish layers and old retouches were removed, ultimately bringing the work closer again to the “symphony in yellow” that Van Gogh envisioned in October 1885.
