Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen will present a major retrospective of Marisol (1930–2016), the Venezuelan American artist who became an icon of Pop Art in the 1960s. With her distinctive wooden figurative ensembles and sharp sense of humour, she captivated the art world, only to disappear from visibility in the art world almost overnight. Now she finally receives the recognition she deserves. For the first time in Europe, her oeuvre will be presented on a large scale, featuring more than seventy international loans. Beneath the wit and visual appeal of her work lies a pointed reflection on the role of women, social norms, and our treatment of the environment—issues that remain as urgent today as ever.

In 1968, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen organised Marisol’s first solo exhibition, and shortly thereafter acquired her artwork The Car (1964), a visitor favourite. After 58 years, the “Queen of Pop Art” returns to Rotterdam. The exhibition is organised with the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Kunsthaus Zürich and the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, and has been made possible by the Buffalo AKG Art Museum.

The exhibition is made possible by the VriendenLoterij and the Turing Foundation.
