More information

It is remarkable that this figure can only be viewed from one side; the left side is missing. A recurring iconic detail is that Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus held the shroud of Christ together and in this way lowered him into the grave. The man has his right foot a quarter of a turn outwards. This allows the high boot with indented cap and straight nose to be seen. This type of boot was in fashion around 1515-1530 and is thus an indication of the date of the statue.
