During and shortly after the Second World War, de Staël enjoyed some success with his dark abstract paintings, but he shot to international fame when his work later became figurative and more colourful (Mediterranean landscapes, but also footballers). Much of his later work is rather superficial and not unlike posters, but this still life is beautifully conceived with its ragged-edged fields of colour applied with a palette knife.
