Ask anything

  • Dr. Gianluca Bocchi asked

Dear Sirs, the literature reports that this still life is signed by Giuseppe Recco. Can you tell me where the signature is and how it is written exactly?
    Thank you for your attention
    Best regards
    Dr. Gianluca Bocchi

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

    Dear Dr Gianluca,
In the details you can find the signature is written on the inkwell, it says G. Recco.
It's really hard to see, but if you zoom in you can see some sort of signature on the inkwell.
I hope this answers your question. Kind Regards, Sofie

More information

Masks are both theatrical attributes and symbols of deception. The tambourine is not only an attribute of the muses, but is also a reference to physical love. Cesare Ripa's book Iconologia' (Moral Emblems) lies open at the personifications of 'Irresoluzione'
(irresolution) and 'Ira' (anger). The meaning of the ensemble: when life is governed by these vices it leads to chaos and destruction. However, if they can be suppressed this will lead to harmony.
