Although Bazaine’s paintings appear abstract, with their blocks of colour and black lines going in various directions, he was essentially a landscape painter. Land and water, rocks, clouds, tree trunks and foliage in various seasons under a range of weather conditions: the observation of nature is the basis of his art. As in this painting, with its cold, wintery palette and the suggestion of branches denuded of their leaves.
