Soulages usually gives his paintings a date instead of a title. This gives the impression that he works on a painting for no more than a single day and that is indeed probably the case. This dynamic composition appears very direct, the result of a limited number of strokes with extremely broad brushes and a substantial quantity of paint in a restricted palette: dark brown, black and a little white or ochre.
