Ask anything

  • Iuliia Rudenko asked

Good afternoon. In your opinion, is the green background in the picture original? Or was it painted over later?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Luliia, Thank you for your question. I have asked Ruben Suykerbuyk, our curator of old masters, and he writes this: "During the restoration of the panel in 2007-2009, no indications were found that the background was overpainted. On the contrary, from paint samples, the stratigraphy (layering of paint layers) could be discerned, which revealed that the golden ornaments at the top were painted over the green background. Since the white cap of the woman, in turn, sits over these golden ornaments, it is highly plausible that the background was originally green. In its current form, the background appears somewhat blotchy and brown in some places, due to the discoloration of the green, copper-containing glaze layers. Unfortunately, this is a natural aging process in paintings."
I hope this answer is helpful. Kind regards, Els
