  • Agnes Peresztegi asked

    Dear Madam/Sir,
Would you please give me information on the provenance? I know it was owned by Marcell Nemes at one point, and would like to clarify the dates. Thank you for your assistance. Sincerely, Agnes Peresztegi

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Agnes, unfortunately in our archive I don't see a clear purchase date. What I do see is that the next owner on our list (which might not be complete), Ducrey, bought it in Paris after 1913. Also, on the website of the RKD I found some more info: https://rkd.nl/en/explore/images/27760. Good luck with your search! Best, Rianne

More information

The painting by Gerard David is probably from the Carmelite nunnery of Salamanca. It is a characteristic example of a devotion panel, intended for private use. The panel shows Mary with bared breast and with the child on her lap, who is offering her a fruit. She is seated on a wall overgrown with plants and flowers that suggests 'hortus conclusus'. The theme of a walled garden is derived from the Bible (Song of Solomon 4:12): 'A garden inclosed is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed.' This enclosed garden is used as a symbol of Mary's virginity.
