  • Steven asked

Is there any more info or sources about Landscape with the Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah by Joachim Patinir? Thanks.

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

    Dear Steven,
I'm not aware of any literature about this work. But I can give you some more information about the story. Abraham's cousin, Loth, was from Chaldese Ur and settled in Sodom. By Abraham's intercession he, his wife, and his two daughters were saved from the judgment of God against the immoral cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. While fleeing, Loth's wife violated the prohibition to see the destruction of the city by the heavenly fire and was turned into a pillar of salt. Loth retired to a cave with his daughters. The two girls, fearful of being childless abroad, got their father drunk and seduced him. Both conceived and gave birth to the two progenitors of Israel who were hostile nations, Moab and Ben-Ammi, the Moabites and the Ammonites respectively. (Genesis 18 and 19)
I hope this answers your question! Kind regards, Sofie

More information

The sky turns red in this apocalyptic destruction of the sinful cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, punished by God. Only Lot and his daughters survive the inferno; they are led away by two angels. At the centre of the painting stands Lot's wife, transformed into a pillar of salt. In the upper right is the tent in which Lot and his daughters will stay.
