This fairly broadly painted still life by the German artist shows a simple room with a bare wall. Simple foods are laid out: a string of onions on the wall; a wooden board with two herrings is on top of a glass of beer; there is a piece of cheese, a wad of tobacco and a burning pipe. Paudiss spent some time in Holland where he was, among other things, a pupil in the studio of Rembrandt in 1642. As a reminder of his master, an etching or drawing inspired by Rembrandt hangs on the wall.
