Appearances are deceptive. At first glance this is a genre work, like the painting of the young women making music next to it. But this panel is not just any young woman; the ointment jar on the window sill tells us that it is Mary Magdalene. The beloved she holds more dear than her husband, according to the song, is therefore not her lover but Jesus Christ.
