A group of citizens of Rotterdam gave this painting to Museum Boymans on its reopening in 1935. Hynckes flirted with Cubism briefly but was now painting this kind of reflection on death and mortality in a very traditional style. A contemporary wrote that although he did so in a masterly way, his pretence of being an ‘Old Master’ was irritating.
