A cockerel with hens was a frequently used theme in Dutch painting during the 17th century. Gijsbert Gillisz d’Hondecoeter, who specialised in illustrating birds, painted this subject. He has paid the greatest possible attention to showing the poultry as accurately as possible. Thanks to this, it would actually be possible to produce an inventory of breeds that have long since become extinct.
