This portrait of an unknown woman by Jacob Gerritsz Cuyp has, as its pendant, the ‘Portrait of a 66-year-old officer’ by the same painter. The portraits form a whole as it were and together show the married couple. According to the inscription: 'Aetatis 40 JG Cuijp. fecit Ano 1644’, the woman was 40 years old in 1644, the year in which Cuyp painted the portrait. The oval shape of the portraits is unusual for Cuyp. Possibly the shape was dictated by the commission to allow the paintings to match those of older portraits.
