Van Bronckhorst painted this soon after returning from Italy. It shows real ambition, but also reeks of amateur dramatics. Rachel pretended that it was her time of the month so that she could stay seated on the household gods she had stolen from home. Laban, her father, believed her and stopped searching. Her husband Jacob, on the right, hasn’t a clue what she’s up to.
