This impressive head of Jan Toorop is a by-product of Rädecker’s monument to the artist, commissioned by the municipality of The Hague in 1930 and completed in 1937. In the carved stone monument, the portrait of Toorop is flanked by smaller heads with symbolic meanings. The work shown here is a cast from a preparatory study, modelled in clay. Charley Toorop used another cast for her painting, ‘Three Generations’.
