This painting recalls the Nazi invasion and bombing of Rotterdam of May 1940. The double portrait shows the painter and, on the right, his close friend Joost Planten. With their clear and precise style, Jan Verstegen's works are representative of the realist painting style that had its heyday in the Netherlands in the 1930s and 1940s.
