Gerrit Dijsselhof trained as a painter but, influenced by the ideas of the English Arts & Crafts movement, wanted to reunite art and crafts. This mantelpiece is a fine example of this practice. Dijsselhof designed and carved the sea creatures above the watercolour of fishes. The result is more a decorative panel than a work of art.
