  • Barbara Jewell asked

Can you tell me the approximate age and value of the bellarmine jug at https://www.boijmans.nl/en/collection/artworks/129240/bellarmine-jug. Does the (in 1890 - 1910) indicate its age?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Barbara, Yes indeed, '1890-1910' indicates the period in which this brass jug must have been made, so it is approximately 110-130 years old. The museum houses a lot of other bellarmine juggs, most of which are ceramics. Many date from the sixteenth century, but there are also nineteenth century jugs. As for the value: in the museum we are primarily occupied with the (art)historical and socio-political value of the objects. You might have a look at vintage platforms like E-bay or Catawiki to find out what a jug like this would do in terms of money. Good luck! Els
