Like his more famous brother Bram, Geer van Velde spent most of his working life in France. His two greatest influences were the wild colours of the Fauves and the geometry of Cubism, with the latter gradually gaining the upper hand. In his compositions, made up of rectilinear and diagonal fields in shades of grey and brown, there always remains a suggestion of a still life or an interior with daylight pouring in.
