Théodore Rousseau's 'Descente des vaches dans le Jura' from 1834-1836 must have made a deep impression on Diaz. Despite being refused for the Salon, this piece gained much publicity when a number of prominent critics publicly supported Rousseau. The daring composition - a herd descending a steep mountain-side, painted on a strikingly attenuated canvas - was copied by Diaz on various occasions.
The panel probably dates from around 1850. It is undoubtedly a preliminary study for a larger painting, perhaps for the work 'Vaches à l'abreuvoir’, that was sold in 1853 at an auction of his own works, organised by the artist.
