Calligraphic engraving of glass was considered a useful pastime for the cultural elite in the 17th century. The poet Anna Roemers Visscher, for example, was very adept at this craft. These glass bottles were engraved with decorative script by Willem van Heemskerk, a cloth merchant from Leiden.
