In the mid-19th century many consumers had a preference for highly naturalistic decoration. The base of this table is an oak tree standing among ferns. A lifelike fox stands threateningly on its hind legs spying upon a nest of chicks on a branch. Around 1900 design reformers campaigned against this kind of ‘deceitful’ decoration.
