Little more of the horse than the lines of its neck can be seen in this early drawing. Degas focused on the bearing of the ‘gentleman rider’. He used coloured paper so that he could introduce highlights with white chalk and contrast the head with the top hat against the background. At the top there is a note ‘pas mal plus penché en barrière’ (not bad, leaning back more) as a reminder to himself.
