This drawing by Dutch painter Nicolaes Berchem depicts two oxen and a sheep by a stream. It is an example of a poetic, Italianate landscape with peacefully grazing cattle next to a babbling brook. Around the middle of the 17th century, dozens of artists in the Low Countries produced paintings with this subject, including Berchem. However, his drawings served not as preliminary studies, but as examples he could use to vary his paintings.
The drawing is signed at the top right and dated ‘Berghem f 1654’, which is common for Berchem's drawings from around 1653 to 1660.
