In his early drawings, Rembrandt often depicted
street figures, such as beggars. This study of a seated man wearing a tall hat
shows his keen observation of everyday life. The pose corresponds to his
etchings of beggars from around 1629–1630 and reflects the influence of Jacques
Callot’s print series 'Les Gueux' (1622–23), in which
the poor are depicted in detailed and realistic ways.
