This drawing, made on Bresdin's usual tracing paper in Indian ink, includes several studies that may be preliminary ideas for his lithograph of 'La République', dated 1883 but unpublished. The female figure with laurel wreath differs significantly in the finished print, and the lion does not appear. However the painter's palette, books and mathematical instruments at the top right in our drawing have been adapted at the lower edge of the print.
