More information

This small drawing made in Indian ink on thin tracing paper is typical of the studies that Bresdin made for his prints, in this case a study for part of a battlefield in an etching often titled 'l'Armée romaine'. The etching exists in three states, the earliest dated to 1856. More preparatory studies are in the Art Institute of Chicago. The drawing was given to the museum by the French dealer and expert Louis Godefroy during a trip to the Netherlands. His study of Bresdin's prints, prepared with Marius-Ary Leblond, was never published.
