Lucas van Leyden was the greatest innovator in Dutch printmaking of the early 16th century. His compositions, alive with figures, were admired for their faithful rendition of materials and the great diversity of poses, expressions, hairstyles, clothes and head dresses. ‘The Dance of St Mary Magdalen’ is one of his largest and most ambitious engravings. The scene depicts the saint’s sinful life before she turned to Christ.
