This drawing portrays St Joseph as the patron saint of the Order of Carmelites, and reproduces the central part of a lost painting by Rubens, an altarpiece commissioned by Archduke Albert and the Infanta Isabella that was painted in 1620. The drawing was also a design for a print; this is why it has been indented. The stone tablet at the bottom - blank in the drawing - has an inscription in the print.
