Until recently this scene was described as ‘Two Ladies-in-waiting on Horseback with an Escort’, but they are probably two expensively-dressed courtesans offering their favours to a soldier (a mercenary), whose head is hidden behind his raised left arm. The artist is the lesser-known brother of Albrecht Altdorfer. Erhard was a painter, printmaker and architect and for a long time (1512‑1561) worked at the court of the dukes of Mecklenburg‑Schwerin.
