'Mount Vesuvius was blazing... Cinders fell... then pumice-stones too.' The volcanic eruption of 79 A.D., so graphically described by Pliny, proved fatal to, among other beings, a chained watchdog, which could not escape the disaster and was buried under the ash. The impression of its dying body was discovered in 1870 and cast as a sculpture. In 1991 McCollum was given permission to make 100 plaster casts of it, with the result that this piece of fixed time from the history of Pompeii started to lead a new life in multiplied form.
