This drawing and that of a woman’s head can be linked to four paintings including a ‘Christ Carrying the Cross’, now in the Rijksmuseum. The man’s head appears to be a preliminary drawing for the head of Simon of Cyrene, who helped Christ carry the cross. Jordaens used the woman’s head for the figure of Veronica, who handed Christ her veil to wipe away the sweat.
