Johan Meijerink was born on the Indonesian island Java, but moved to Rotterdam as a child. He was well known for his serene sculptures in lead, bronze and steel, which call to mind simplified architectural forms such as columns and temple domes. In addition to this work, the City Collection has two other works by Johan Meijerink: Tempietto d'amore II (1988) and Still Life (1989/1990).
