Museumpark Vriendendag 2026

On Sunday the 21st of June (Father’s Day), the ninth edition of the Museumpark Friends’ Day will take place! Chabot Museum, Kunsthal, the Natural History Museum, the Nieuwe Instituut and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen are once again holding an open day this year for all friends of the museums in the Museumpark. We would like to thank our friends for their support and commitment and once again all friends will be able to visit various exhibitions.

Programme

To thank you for your support as a Friend, we have once again organised an inspiring programme, this year centred around the theme ‘Beneath the Surface’. Curator Bram Langeveld (Natural History Museum) will kick off the day with the question: ‘What lies hidden beneath our feet in the Museumpark?’. Bram will show how he is currently literally delving into the subsoil of Rotterdam. The fossils he retrieves from the surface tell the story of millions of years.

Programme

  • 12.00: Doors open and choice of guided tour at the Nieuwe Instituut
  • 12.30: Opening remarks by curator Bram Langeveld
  • 13.30: Guided tour 1
  • 14.30: Guided tour 2
  • 15.30: Guided tour 3
  • 16.00: End

Which tours are available?

In the Depot of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, we will take you on a journey through the restoration of Van Gogh’s Populieren. This year, we will delve into the literal and figurative layers of the long-running restoration project of the Poplars near Nuenen. You are also very welcome to choose one or more guided tours at one of the other institutions. You will find the full list of available guided tours at the bottom of the page.

Please note: Just like last year, you can choose which guided tours you’d like to join on the day itself. From 12 noon, we will welcome you at our desk in the Nieuwe Instituut. Please arrive on time so you can join the guided tour(s) of your choice. Do you still have your cheerful keycard from last year? Don’t forget to bring it along!

Natural History Museum

The area that is now Rotterdam has been home to all manner of animals for millions of years. Deep boreholes bring the fossil evidence of this to the surface. See them with your own eyes! They have been brought out of storage especially for Friends’ Day. Afterwards, they will be safely returned to the ground.

Nieuwe Instituut

Fungi fulfil a wide range of human needs and are gaining ground in design and architecture. The exhibition FUNGI. Anarchist Designers shows that fungi are more than just a sustainable design material. They are independently operating organisms that make us look at growth, exploitation and coexistence in a different light. Discover this through an interactive detour: not a traditional guided tour, but exploring the exhibition together with a maker or designer.

Kunsthal Rotterdam

In keeping with the theme of Beneath the Surface, during this guided tour of Flowers Forever at Kunsthal Rotterdam, you will go beyond the visible together with a guide. The exhibition explores the role of flowers through the centuries, from religious symbol to commodity and political instrument.

An English tour is available at Kunsthal. We would love to welcome you in Kunsthal Rotterdam at 13:00.

Chabot Museum

Henk Chabot, after whom the Chabot Museum is named, painted people: on the land, on the run and at war. In his work, he sought to get ‘beneath the surface’ of the figures he painted, to reveal who they truly are.
