This drawing was made during Fragonard’s second journey to Italy and in particular to Rome. The artist travelled with a small company which included his wife and the fabulously wealthy Bergeret de Grancourt. Bergeret, who had invited the artist to accompany him, kept a diary. On the journey Fragonard made several drawings, usually large, finished compositions. On the way back there was an argument about these drawings, which Bergeret claimed, and in the end he was awarded them by order of the court.
