Jordaens often made use of contrasts of light and shade to create dramatic effects. Via Rubens, who had been in Italy, he was influenced by Caravaggio’s nocturnal scenes and chiaroscuro. The drawing is a composition study for a painting (now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon), in which Jordaens left out the curtain and the figure in front of it. The engraver Marinus van der Goes made a print after the painting, in which the image is mirrored.
