Ask anything

  • moatasam abdulrazaq asked

    Hi
Can you tell me pleas what this object used for and made of what material.
    Thanks

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

    Dear Moatasam,
Thank you for your question. Chafing dishes were used as stoves. The dish could hold a pot or pan on top, which then in turn would be heated with coals or a small fire underneath. The materials used are red glaze and redware.
    Best,
    Frederieke
