In addition to sculptures, Van der Gaag also made drawings and an occasional painting. This work’s title refers to a place in Italy where mysterious, probably prehistoric rock carvings have been found that resemble a four-petalled flower with dots on and around it. The undulating contour is recognisable in the painting; through a process of free association, the dots have apparently become oyster shells.
